Samantha McClary receives Outstanding Contribution recognition

Samantha McClary was recognised for her exceptional contribution to built environment journalism at the 2025 IBP Awards.

McClary, now CEO of the British Council for Offices, was honoured for her long career in property journalism and for championing greater diversity across the real estate sector.

She spent 21 years at Estates Gazette, the last six as editor. During that time, she launched several initiatives, including the EG Public Sector Forum, the Investor Forum, the Diversity and Inclusion Forum, and the Future Leaders Programme.

Throughout her career, McClary consistently championed strong journalistic principles and used the platform to challenge and support the sector it covers. In her new role at the British Council for Offices, she continues to bring the same energy and leadership to the industry.

Speaking at the event, she said, "It is an incredible honour and extremely humbling to receive this accolade, especially when you read the list of previous recipients. It comes with extra meaning too, having moved out of the world of journalism earlier this year and into a role that enables me to become a true champion for our industry, while retaining the ability to challenge.

“Championing and challenging the real estate sector has been a key driver for me over the last few years, and it means so much to be recognised for this. The pen is always mightier than the sword, and journalism, used correctly, has the power to deliver real change. Storytelling, communication and an ability to share the truth are the fundamentals of journalism, but are also, as I'm learning in my new role, incredible tools to have available in any role."

The winners of the 2025 IBP Awards have been announced, recognising outstanding journalism across the built environment sector.

Held at The Building Centre on Thursday 27 November, the awards recognised excellence across architecture, construction, housing, property and infrastructure journalism, highlighting the vital role the media plays in shaping understanding of the built environment.

Among the winners, Melissa York, assistant property editor at The Times and The Sunday Times, was named IBP Journalist of the Year. She was recognised for three standout stories that uncovered complex policy and financial anomalies while bringing to life the human stories behind them. The judges praised her ability to combine rigorous investigation with clarity, narrative flair and real-world impact

York also won Housing and Residential Property Journalist of the Year, while nine category winners and a number of highly commended journalists were recognised for their contributions to built environment journalism.

IBP has introduced a new brand identity to reflect the organisation’s evolving mission and growing community.

The refreshed branding, now visible across the relaunched website, gives IBP a clearer and more contemporary identity.

It reflects our mission to champion excellence in built environment journalism and communications, we do this through celebrating talent, providing opportunities for underrepresented groups and helping the industry tell better and more impactful stories.

Over the past few years, IBP has strengthened and expanded its activities in support of that mission.

We have relaunched our long-established journalism awards, appointing a broader and more representative panel of judges and introducing a new category, Podcast of the Year.

The awards ceremony has also evolved into a lively gathering for both journalists and communications professionals across the built environment.

Our internship programme, which offers paid work experience to people from underrepresented backgrounds, is now in its third year and has delivered clear benefits for both interns and participating employers.

IBP has also hosted a range of events for members, including discussions exploring the opportunities and challenges created by artificial intelligence (AI).

The new brand provides a platform for the next stage of IBP’s development as a diverse, inclusive and connected community, reflecting the values of our members and supporters who support our ambition to strengthen built environment journalism and communications in the years ahead.
