SUMMARY:IBP Journalism Awards Dinner 2017
DESCRIPTION:Journalists in our sector consider the IBP Journalism Awards just as important to win as the PPA\, AOP and BSME awards; many think that they are the only awards in which to showcase their work\, in the built environment\, and pitch their best work against their colleagues and rivals\, to secure recognition for their work and content platform\, be it a newspaper\,\nmagazine or digital platform. \nThe Awards Dinner provides you with an opportunity to dine and entertain your guests in the company of this year’s winning editors and journalists from the built environment media. You can host a category table\, reserve your own table (with branding options)\, or half table\, or simply purchase a single ticket. \nRead full information and to book tickets in the NJ Awards 2017 Flyer

SUMMARY:The Big Industry Debate
DESCRIPTION:Should the construction industry control the design of its own products? \nCalls for construction managers to take a more pro-active role in the design of what they build have become increasingly loud. But how will this work in practice? \nAuthor Colin Harding BSc Tech Hons\, Chartered Construction Manager and Past President CIOB introduces a ground-breaking Code of Practice for Integrated Design and Construction-Single Responsibility. \nTaking the form of a brief introduction and a Q&A session you will have the opportunity to challenge and clarify the IDCsr supposition that a totally integrated design and construction process will make it as simple and satisfactory to buy a building as it is to purchase any other high value\, warranted manufactured product. \nSpeakers\, including James Wates\, and members of the audience will include the CIOB’s working Group which assisted and advised in the drafting of the Code of Practice.

The first on Tuesday 3rd November is themed around investigative journalism and features an incredible line-up of three of the UK’s best respected investigative journalists. Two of our panelists have been shortlisted for this year’s Orwell Prize for journalism and the third was instrumental in winning The Guardian’s Pulitzer Prize last year: \nJames Ball\, Buzzfeed\nGeorge Arbuthnott\, The Sunday Times\nNick Mathiason\, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism \nThey have kindly agreed to share with IBP members the investigative techniques they used to land some of the biggest scoops of the past two years\, and what lessons they learned along the way. Journalism students at City University\, which is supporting the Futures Group events\, will also be attending and keen to network in the pub afterwards. \nTo attend\, please click the link to RSVP below. In order to be eligible for a place\, you must join the IBP LinkedIn group. Tickets are free\, but limited so will be allocated on a first come\, first served basis. \nMore on the panel: \nJames Ball \n \nJames\, who has recently joined Buzzfeed from the The Guardian has broken some of the biggest scoops of the past two years. No stranger to lawyers and spreadsheets\, after working at Wikileaks and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism\, James was the byline behind the revelations that emerged from Edward Snowden’s leaks about the US government’s covert surveillance of its citizens – and also the German Chancellor. Last year he was part of the team of hacks behind a forensic investigation which bust open the global scandal of HSBC aiding tax evasion.\nhttp://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/feb/08/hsbc-files-expose-swiss-bank-clients-dodge-taxes-hide-millions?CMP=share_btn_tw@jamesrbuuk\n \nGeorge Arbuthnott \n \nGeorge Arbuthnott’s work both on his own and as part of The Sunday Times’ Insight investigations team has been consistently powerful and compelling. He has been shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for his expose of the modern slavery in Britain\, ranging from the exploitation of Vietnamese workers to Eastern European migrants working in a bed factory for £2 a day – the owner of which became the first UK boss to be charged with human trafficking. George was also behind The Sunday Times athletics doping scandal which leaked drug testing findings that continue to rock the world of sport months later.\nhttp://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/Magazine/article1361185.ece\n@arbuthnott \nNick Mathiason \n \nNick Mathiason\, from The Bureau of Investigative Journalism\, will be a name familiar to most journalists writing about the built environment. His incredible FOI investigations exposing how developers are shrugging their affordable housing obligations have put the housing crisis into the spotlight for the first time. Nick’s year-long investigation\, ‘A Great British Housing Crisis’\, appeared in Vice and The Guardian and sparked furious political debate\, while his scrutiny of the affordable housing delivery of the Crown Estate and the Dutchy of Cornwall.\nhttps://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/2014/12/15/investigating-the-great-british-housing-crisis/\n@nickmathiason \nWe hope you can make it. SUMMARY:THE ANNUAL WREN TALK - SIMON THURLEY
DESCRIPTION:ACCIDENT OR ARTIFICE? DESIGNING A CAPITAL FROM WREN TO ABERCROMBIE \nSimon Thurley takes a broad historical perspective on the planning of London from the Great Fire to the Blitz. He asks what are the defining characteristics of London’s growth and how have they contributed to the city we have today. \nWhat makes London like the other great European capitals and what sets it apart? \nDo the efforts of our predecessors from the seventeenth century onwards hold lessons for us now – or are they just history? \nCan London learn from its own past\, or is it better off concentrating on the future? \nPaul Finch OBE\, editorial director of The Architects’ Journal\, will introduce The Wren Talk\, which takes place as part of the London Festival of Architecture. \nTickets \nDoor £15\, Online Tickets £10 available at: www.stbrides.com \nFree for students.
